PROJECT #2: PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION TEST OF ROOM AIR CONDITIONER (PVTRAC)
Air Conditioners monitoring

INVERTER TECHNOLOGY

An inverter is energy saving technology that eliminates wasted operation in air conditioners by efficiently controlling motor speed. In 1980, Toshiba invented the inverter - a technology now employed by most leading brands of air conditioners.

HOW IS MOTOR SPEED CONTROLLED?(Inverter technology)
  1. Motor operates by magnets and electric current.
  2. The direction of electric current determines polarity of the electromagnet
  3. The motor rotates by switching direction of electric current.
  4. The inverter is used to adjust the speed in which the direction of the electric current is switched, and this regulates the rotation speed of the motor.
INVERTER VS. NON-INVERTER AC
  1. Air conditioners maintain set temperature by cooling when room temperature rises above the set temperature and heating when the room temperature falls below the set temperature.
  2. Motor speed in non-inverter type air conditioners remains constant and temperature is adjusted by turning the motor ON and OFF, which consumes more energy.
  3. In inverter type air conditioners, temperature is adjusted by changing motor speed without turning the motor ON and OFF.
  4. Compared to non-inverter type air conditioners, air conditioners with inverters have less power loss and can save in energy.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
  • The promotion of energy efficient products by applying the results of a PVT of room air conditioners.
  • Compare the results of the energy consumption between the non-inverter air conditioners and the inverter air conditioners.
  • Increase the awareness of Egyptian people on the importance of EEC.
