A REAL-TIME MONITORING SYSTEM FOR ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION

The smart home monitoring system mainly includes two main projects that aim to visualize the real-time electricity load consumption for several home appliances.

  • PROJECT #1:ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION BY END-USERS (ECEU)

    Home appliances of five homes:

    • The proposed project will be performed using a prototype for a compact device that can be connected to any conventional home appliance to monitor the power consumption of the appliance and to present the data in a visually attractive way.
    • The proposed project will be carried out by E-JUST research team in five typical households, in Alexandria.
    • The period for the proposed project is 15 months, as it will cover the seasonal weather variations in Egypt.
  • PROJECT #2:PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION TEST OF ROOM AIR CONDITIONER (PVTRAC)

    Inverter Vs. Non-inverter ACs

    • The Performance Verification Test (PVT) will be performed by comparing non-inverter air conditioners and inverter air conditioners, of which the latter are expected to provide highly effective energy efficiency and conservation (EEC)
    • The proposed project will be carried out by E-JUST research team in a dormitory of E-JUST University.
    • The period for the PVT is one year, as it will cover the seasonal weather variations in Egypt.
             

PROJECT POLICIES

The specified policies for both Project #1: Electricity Consumption by End-Users (ECEU) and Project #2: Performance Verification Test of Room Air Conditioner (PVTRAC)

GENERALIZED WORK PLAN
The E-JUST research team collects and provides information for the system construction of the proposed project and project implementation. Equipment, test environment, and additional items are provided by the team regarding the agreement with the sponsors

SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION

The monitor system is constructed to obtain the required data through two steps.

  • 1-Installation of the measurement instrument and the setting

    The E-JUST research team install measurement instruments including power consumption measurement equipment and set date, time, sampling frequency, etc. of the measurement instruments. The dataset from each measurement instrument is synchronized to be able to understand the relationship between each data.

  • 2-Data storage

    The measured dataset is uploaded using a cloud system as E-JUST research team uploads the measured data to the cloud system in real-time so that the data can be confirmed by the consultant in Japan.

OPERATION PROCESSES

The E-JUST research team operates the monitor system properly to implement the proposed project, successfully.

  1. Monitoring the measured data
  2. The E-JUST research team monitors the measured data and if there is something wrong with the data such as missing data, abnormal data, etc., the team will confirm the condition and report the results to the consultant promptly. If there is something wrong with the system, the team will contact the supplier to take measures against the issues promptly.
  3. Setting the operating condition of home appliances/ the air conditioners

The E-JUST research team sets the operating condition of home appliances/ the air conditioners such as temperature, power on/off, etc. based on the request from the consultant to maintain the consistency of data collection.

MAINTENANCE

The E-JUST research team maintains the monitor system properly to implement the proposed project, successfully.

  1. Problems handling
  2. All the data will be checked and supervised by the consultant and the required actions will be taken by the E-JUST research team in case of something wrong.
  3. Appliance/Filter Cleaning
The E-JUST research team maintains all monitored appliances in good operating conditions to maintain the consistency of data collection and also cleans the air conditioner filter several times.
